2023 Radda Rise International Piano Competition

 Henry Tushman

Honorable Mention of Category 3

At 17 years old, Henry Tushman has been recognized both nationally and internationally as a pianist. Under the guidance of Dr. Sandra Hebert at the Rivers School Conservatory, Henry has not only developed his artistic skills but also achieved notable accolades, including the 2022 Rivers School Conservatory Director’s Award. Beyond private lessons, he is also a member of the A. Ramón Rivera Senior Piano Seminar at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School and has attended Cremona International Music Academy in Italy for six summers.

In the competitive sphere, Henry was named the Massachusetts State winner in the 2022-2023 MTNA Senior Piano Competition and was honored with the prestigious 2024 National YoungArts Award. He was also recognized with an Honorable Mention in the Boston Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and earned first prize in other competitions including: The American Prize (both solo and concerto divisions), Steinway Society of Massachusetts, Society of American Musicians, Young Musicians Inspiring Change, Bradshaw & Buono, National League of Performing Arts, and the International Franz Liszt Center Piano Competition.

As a soloist, Henry recently performed the first movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 with the New England Philharmonic, drawing high praise from the Boston Classical Review which lauded his performance as a “lively, dancing account…[with] steady rhythmic energy and clear voicings…that helped bring this favorite to life.” Henry has performed with orchestras six times, including under the direction of Conner Gray Covington, Associate Conductor of the Utah Symphony. In two upcoming performances, he is scheduled to play with the Oistrakh Symphony of Chicago as the Piano Division Winner of the DePaul National Concerto Competition for Young Performers, as well as the Rivers Symphony Orchestra in Massachusetts as the Senior Division Winner of the Rivers School Conservatory Concerto Competition in March of 2024.

One of the things Henry most appreciates about the piano is that it has given him the opportunity to share his music on unique international stages, including playing with the Tarnὀw Chamber Orchestra in Poland at the “Ambassador of Tarnὀw Maestro Krystian Tkaczewski and his Guests” International Piano Festival, as well as performing on Elton John’s red piano in the Elgar Room at Royal Albert Hall. Additionally, Henry has performed in Boston Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Brussels’ Bozar Centre for Fine Arts.

As an active participant in master classes with esteemed pianists such as Victor Rosenbaum, Alexander Korsantia, and Roberto Plano, Henry continually seeks opportunities to grow and refine his musicianship. He has particularly enjoyed engaging in contemporary music and is grateful to have had opportunities to work closely with ground-breaking composers including Andrew List, Amy Reich, and Whitman Brown. On two occasions, he has premiered works specifically composed for him, showcasing his versatility across diverse musical styles. Outside of his solo pursuits, Henry has performed with chamber music ensembles through the Cremona International Music Academy and the Boston Music Institute.

Away from the piano, Henry is a junior at Wellesley High School, where he plays soccer and sings in the Wellesley High School Keynote Singers.
