Biography

Lon Fon Law is a double bassist from Hong Kong, currently based in New Jersey. Born in 2000, he began studying the double bass at the age of twelve and has since developed into a distinctive and expressive performer with a wide-ranging solo, chamber, and orchestral career. He has studied with leading bass pedagogues including Harold Robinson, Graham Mitchell, Tom Goodman, and Dominic Seldis.

Lon Fon has been recognized in several prestigious international competitions. His honors include the Tom & George Martin Special Award at the International J. M. Sperger Competition in Rostock, Germany, the Alex Ross Double Bass Prize at the Royal Academy of Music, and a semifinalist placement at the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition in Tallahassee, Florida.

His performance career includes a wide range of collaborative projects, many of which highlight contemporary repertoire and new works. He gave the world premiere of Beauty and the Beast for solo double bass by Joan Tower at Angela Burgess Recital Hall in London, and participated in the world premiere tour of Seung-won Oh’s Double Concerto for Cello and Ondes Martenot with Musicus Soloists Hong Kong, performing at Salle Gaveau in Paris and Hong Kong City Hall.

Lon Fon is also an active orchestral musician. He currently serves as Acting Principal Bass with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and is a member of Musicus Soloists Hong Kong. Additional highlights include appearances with the New Jersey Symphony Chamber Players, performances at the Music Academy of the West Chamber Night, participation in the Royal Academy of Music Bicentenary Chamber Music Festival, and involvement in the London Symphony Orchestra String Experience scheme.

Central to Lon Fon’s artistic identity is his belief that music is both a narrative and a spiritual medium, capable of creating direct and meaningful connections between people. He seeks to bring his music to audiences in intimate, evocative, and conversational settings, emphasizing emotional honesty, color, and immediacy. His playing is often described as intimate yet direct, shaped by a wide emotional palette and a strong sense of personal expression.
