2023 Radda Rise International String Competition

Abigail Su Jean Chia

Third Prize - Cello/Bass Division

Category 3

Abigail Su Jean Chia embarked on her musical journey in her home country of Malaysia, first exploring the violin at age three and then the piano two years later. At ten, her path took a pivotal turn when she joined the Singapore Kid's Philharmonic Orchestra and discovered the cello. This newfound instrument quickly eclipsed her initial love for the violin. With the cello becoming a significant part of her musical identity, her dedication to the piano grew alongside it. This dual focus unveiled the vast universe of music to her. Under the guidance of her current teachers, cellist Jonathan Oh and pianist Loo Bang Hean, music transitioned from a hobby to a defining element of Abigail’s identity and life.

Abigail has achieved numerous accolades in music competitions throughout the years. In 2023, she earned the Excellence Award at the 6th Steinway Amateur Class Prize. At the 2021 Medici International Music Competition, she claimed 2nd Prize for cello. Additionally, she won Gold in the Muar Youth Piano Competition 2021 and participated in the Melbourne International Piano and Strings Competition for two consecutive years. Internationally, she stood out in competitions like the 2023 Hong Kong-International Piano Open Competition Malaysia Division and secured a Gold prize for Cello Solo in the 2019 Osaka International Music Competition Preliminary. In 2019, her ensemble performance was awarded a Silver Prize at the Singapore Raffles International Music Festival.

Furthermore, Abigail has been an active member of various ensembles, such as the Kid's Philharmonic Orchestra, Mandeville Music Conservatory Chamber, and the Hallelujah Chamber Orchestra in Singapore.
