Biography
Carson Zheng is a nine-year-old violinist from Oshawa, Ontario, whose passion for music has been the driving force of his young life since he first picked up the violin at age five. His musical journey began in 2021 at Upscale Music School, where his natural talent and dedication quickly became evident.
Recognizing Carson's potential, his family sought instruction with the esteemed John Beaton, Music Director of the Durham Youth Orchestra for nearly 30 years and a beloved mentor who helped shape generations of young musicians. Under Mr. Beaton's guidance, Carson flourished both technically and artistically. In 2023, he joined the Durham Youth Orchestra, where he discovered the joy of ensemble playing and performed works from the core classical repertoire. His dedication was further recognized in 2024, when he earned third place in the Upper String Final (Violin Level 4) at the Ontario Music Festival Association competition.
On March 1, 2025, Carson performed as second violin in the DYO Spring Concert at Hebron Christian Reformed Church in Whitby. This performance was especially meaningful, as it marked his final concert under the mentorship of Mr. Beaton, who had been courageously battling cancer. Mr. Beaton's passing left a lasting impression on Carson, who continues to carry his teacher's wisdom, encouragement, and love for music with him. Since 2025, Carson has been studying with Daniel Temnik, an Israeli-born Canadian violinist and distinguished educator whose students have won top prizes and gained admission to leading institutions worldwide.
Carson's dedication to music extends beyond the violin. He began studying piano at age six, broadening his musical foundation and deepening his understanding of classical repertoire. He also dreams of becoming a composer, hoping to write his own music that will inspire others.
His love for classical music is matched by his enthusiasm for mathematics and his gift for friendship. A fourth-grade student at Elsie MacGill Public School, Carson is known for his curiosity, kindness, and bright spirit. Whether in the classroom, among friends, or on stage, his warmth and enthusiasm leave a lasting impression.
